Julien Dumercq, LabEx COTE training coordinator

Crédit LabEx COTECrédit LabEx COTE

Julien Dumercq arrived at LabEx COTE in mid-February 2014 and assists Claire Gouny with training and communication initiatives. He is responsible, among other things, for the organization of the international Summer School.

Julien became interested in scientific communication after a Masters 1 in ecology and the biodiversity of continental ecosystems at the University of Bordeaux 1. Although attracted by the research environment, especially agriculture and forest management, a change in direction took him to the neighboring Bordeaux 3 university with its Masters in HPMS (History and Philosophy of Science and Science Communication). This very "professionalizing" Masters, (which includes skills such as the organization of lectures for the general public, production of an exhibition and a "popular" scientific newspaper), prepared him for the reality of the job and its requirements in terms of organization, precision and availability…

"I always wanted to take on the role of scientific communication for a research laboratory".

However, Julien started his career with a local authority, the municipality of Pessac, developing signage for the parks and gardens presenting the "sustainable" management practices that had been set up by the municipality and the various species of animals and plants concerned. "The idea was to present environmental issues and raise the general public's awareness". Julien created spring and autumn exhibitions for Pessac's Bourgailh ecosite for a period of over a year, including brochures, information panels and other forms of communication.

At LabEx, he will be responsible for communication initiatives relating to current events, with a newsletter, Internet site, and other communication media. Julien's main occupation will be the organization of the international Summer School in collaboration with the organizational committee supervised by Eric Villenave, LabEx COTE's deputy director. This year, the School will take place from 22 to 26 June at a location outside of Bordeaux. This task involves expertise in logistics, the management of speakers and participants (recruitment, contact and follow-up) and communication of information, in particular through the management of the dedicated Internet site, and optimization of the use of the COTE network.
